Summary

The Withers Library and Knowledge Services team is an award winning, collaborative and high-performing team comprised of fourteen people globally. The Research and Knowledge Analyst role requires a strong team player who can work independently but also has the interpersonal skills to build relationships with people in different roles across the global firm. 

Our goal as a global team is to ensure that everyone in the firm is equipped with the knowledge and resources required to deliver a top-class service to our clients. Within the US, the successful candidate will be part of our efforts to raise the profile of library and knowledge in the region and build relationships with people in different roles across the global firm.

Working primarily with the Library and Knowledge team and Knowledge Lawyers based in the US and London, the Research & Knowledge Analyst will have shared responsibility for the provision of library and knowledge services to all seven of Withers' US offices. This is a hybrid role and will work out of our Greenwich or New Haven office. Occasional travel to other East Coast offices may be required. The role will report to the US Head of Libraries & Knowledge.

The expected salary for this position is between $110,000 - $120,000. The actual compensation will be determined based on experience and other factors permitted by law. 

The Role 

Research and Training

  • Act as a trusted advisor to attorneys and business teams by proactively identifying insights, resources and tools that support client delivery, business development, and strategic decision making.
  • Perform legal and business research for attorneys and business services teams.
  • Conduct research to support business development and strategic priorities.
  • Guide and train attorneys and staff on the effective use of research databases, AI-assisted research, knowledge repositories, practice specific resources and print collections.
  • Assist attorneys and business services teams with the monitoring of legal, business and news sources for current developments in practice areas and client industries.
  • Record time spent on research utilizing the firm's billing software.

Developing the Service

  • Promote research services by proactively providing information to attorneys and staff, including leading new joiner orientations and practice meeting attendance.
  • Willing and able to present ideas and implement 'best practices'.
  • Advise on local policies and procedures for the US offices in line with the firm's global strategy for Library & Knowledge Services.
  • Collaborate and attend regular meetings with other Library and Knowledge Services team members in the US and overseas offices.
  • Build strong collaborative relationships with US colleagues in other support teams including IT, Conflicts and HR.
  • Contribute to and complete administrative and other projects as assigned.

Managing Resources

  • Maintain office library print collections, which may include shelving, circulating, shifting, weeding and relocating library materials.
  • Shared responsibility for the evaluation of resources, including, but not limited to, assessing the business need for new acquisitions and current subscriptions.

Knowledge Sharing

  • Assist with knowledge management initiatives and the roll­out of new tools and other initiatives, as required.
  • Collaborate with US-based and overseas Knowledge Lawyers on identifying knowledge gaps and facilitate knowledge sharing.
  • Commitment to maintaining individual professional development through literature review and attendance at various webinars/conferences and sharing those insights with colleagues.

Key Skills and Experience

  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) from an ALA-accredited program.
  • 5 to10+ years' professional experience in a law library.
  • Supervisory experience is a plus.
  • Proficiency with online resources including Westlaw Edge, Lexis+, Checkpoint, VitalLaw, Bloomberg Law, Lexis Newsdesk, Capital IQ, Practical Law, Intelligize, TLO, PACER and other types of web­ based services.
  • Strong understanding of generative AI tools embedded in research platforms (Lexis, Bloomberg, etc) and standalone tools such as Legora or Microsoft Copilot and how they can be used to enhance the speed, accuracy, and insightfulness of research outputs
  • Experience with tax, trusts & estates, litigation, corporate, real estate and intellectual property legal practices.
  • Experience in competitive intelligence research such as profiling companies or individuals for business development and strategic purposes.
  • Basic familiarity with integrated library systems. Experience with Soutron is a plus.
  • Familiarity with original/copy cataloging and creation/maintenance of intranet pages is a plus.
  • Experience with electronic resource management tools like Onelog or similar.
  • Able to summarize large pieces of text and other information, accurately and succinctly.
  • Able to work independently as well as within a team.
  • Strong service orientation with commitment to outstanding customer service.
  • Strong organizational skills.
  • Able to meet deadlines, manage multiple projects and deliver under pressure.
  • Proficiency in the use of standard PC applications, including Microsoft Office suite.
  • Familiarity with document management systems. Experience with iManage is a plus.
  • Strong IT skills, technical curiosity and ability to quickly learn new technologies.
  • Skilled at using own initiative to find solutions to questions or problems and committed to seeing new projects through to completion.
  • Solid interpersonal, written and oral communication skills.
  • Able to communicate with people at all levels of seniority and understands the needs and sensitivities required to work within a global team.
  • Ability and desire to mentor other team members.
  • Ability to operate copy machines and other standard office equipment.
  • Light lifting of books and other library materials is required.
